‘Half Of A Yellow Sun’ is Nollywood’s largest production ever with a cost of N1.27billion. The film, featuring Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor, is based on the novel of same name.
The film is set during the now-50-year-old Nigerian Civil (Biafra) War. It is especially relevant and timely given Nigeria’s precarious political climate. The author is Nigerian-American, born in Abba, (Anambra State) only 10 years after the Biafra war.
With numerous awards and accolades, the book stands on its own merit. The film, though, must face much scrutiny. Among the questions of detractors are “Why is Nollywood’s biggest effort- a film directed by a Nigerian based on a Nigerian author’s book filmed largely in the UK and starring two British (although quite talented) actors.
