Django Unchained is an upcoming western film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. The film is scheduled to be released on December 25, 2012 in North America.
Django (Jamie Foxx) is a slave living in the Deep South after having been separated from his wife Brunhilda (Kerry Washington). When Django is held for a slave auction, Dr. King Schultz (Christoph Waltz), a German bounty hunter who uses his former profession of a dentist as a cover, frees Django from his vicious masters, the Speck brothers (James Remar and James Russo), and gives him the option of helping him hunt down and kill the Brittle Brothers, a ruthless gang of killers whom only Django has seen. In return, Schultz will free Django from slavery completely and help find and rescue Brunhilda from the charming but brutal Francophile Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), who owns Candyland, a plantation where male slaves are trained to fight for sport and female slaves are forced into prostitution. Django agrees, and the two go after Candie and the Brittle gang.
I would guess that this film is worth the price of admission. The release date is Dec. 25, 2012, so I bet it gets its fair share of holiday moviegoers. A good western with an African-American hero is long overdue. I personally love the western genre.
Quentin Tarantino.has often been controversial because of is unapologetic use of the “N” word in his films. His battles with African-American filmmaker Spike Lee are well-documented. Tarantino‘s production guarantees two things. 1. This will be a “shoot-em up”. He loves violence. He portrays it in a raw, gritty non-Hollywood format. 2. There will be some buzz.
Here’s the trailer. If you see the film or just want to talk about it, I would love to hear your comments.
